One Red Rose

A fresh Greg Poppleton Jazz Deco band line-up played today at Sydney's Edwardian Central Station Concourse for the annual Transport Heritage Expo.

Did you see the Transport Heritage Expo story on Saturday's evening news? https://www.facebook.com/7newssydney/videos/2151746698182785/

With Greg Poppleton, authentic 1920s-1930s singer were,
- Damon Poppleton alto sax

A woman rushed up to my megaphone and placed a long-stemmed red rose in it while we were playing.

Greg Poppleton provided the hi-octane musical atmosphere with a selection of bouncy 1920s - 30s tunes sung by Australia's only authentic 1920s-1930s singer.

Entertaining, energetic and engaging, Greg and the band were the focus of plenty of happy snaps by nostalgic bus fans. We've even appeared on a few Facebook pages since.

Penrith RSL Remembrance Day, Greg Poppleton, Bob Gillespie, Lovelace Watkins and Marion Harris

Greg Poppleton and his band of 1920s - 1930s jazz swing musicians had a fantastic Saturday. We played two fun jazz gigs audiences greatly enjoyed and danced to - Penrith RSL Saturday Jazz, followed by 'Deckers in the Night' at the Sydney Bus Museum.

Saturday was Remembrance Day. At the band's previous show in August I had been asked by Penrith Club members to introduce a suitable song to commemorate the day.

I chose the 1918, armistice year hit, 'After You've Gone', inspired by one of my favourite singers, Marion Harris,
As always, I took some snaps of the Greg Poppleton band for you. The band features some of Sydney's most experienced swing, jazz musicians. All are world-toured.

Drummer, Bob Gillespie, played in the Glenn Miller Orchestra for their 1990s Australian tours as well as being drummer for Maynard Ferguson's English Band and musical director for Lovelace Watkins. You can see him here backing Lovelace Watkins on 'My Way'.

Wednesday night, 26 April, Greg Poppleton and band returned to Palmer & Co to play at the Wednesday night 'Swinging At The Speakeasy'.

One couple at the bar, enjoying Greg Poppleton and band, told me that our energetic, swinging, 1920s performance made them think they were back in New York City.

With Greg Poppleton in the band were Paul Furniss clarinet, Paul Baker banjo and Greg Chilcott sousaphone.

Penrith RSL Saturday Jazz 19 August

Thank you to all of you who came to Penrith RSL for jazz this Saturday and made the afternoon so much fun.

The jazz audience at Penrith RSL make the whole afternoon a great social occasion, so the band and I always look forward to playing in the city by the Nepean.

In fact, we'll be back at Penrith RSL for Armistice Day, 11 November, 2 - 5pm.

With me in the band today as I sang the songs of the 1920s and 1930s, we had, by special request, the great honour of being joined by bass brass virtuoso, Cazzbo Johns, formerly of the Australian Opera.

Bob Gillespie, musical director for Lovelace Watkins and drummer for Maynard Fergusson's English Band was on the kit.

Guitarist for Ricky May, Grahame Conlon, swung on his Spanish guitar and banjo.

Damon Poppleton, aged 14, jammed on alto and tenor saxes. And Flynn Poppleton, age 10, sat in on drums for On The Sunny Side Of The Street.

As always, I've taken some happy snaps for you below. See you at Penrith, 11 November!
